Day 556:

Boost your self-esteem by drinking at least eight glasses of water a day.

Welcome to the one hundred and ninety-first day of our second volume of this series. On the corresponding day of the first volume we had:

Boost your self-esteem by treating your body like the temple of the spirit.

We have previously mentioned that we are body/mind/soul/spirit and we need look after all these elements in order to have a healthy self-esteem. Today we suggest you look after your body by drinking enough water.

We are made of about seventy five percent water. It is important to replenish that water by drinking enough water. When we drink enough water (at least eight glasses a day) we give our body a chance to detoxify and restore health. Also when we drink enough water we do not need as much food to fill us up and this helps us manage our weight.

It is important that the water we drink be pure and nourishing without contaminants. A simple filter will get rid of most contaminants. In fact in most studies filtered tap water is as good as the most expensive mineral waters.

Unfortunately we do not drink enough water and the little water we do drink is highly contaminated with sugar, sugar substitutes, caffeine, alcohol and things like that. I am going to start with a list of drinks to avoid:

  • Sodas -- sugared varieties are bad for you and the diet varieties are even worse.
  • Lemonade -- highly sugared.
  • Coffee -- full of caffeine and also has other noxious chemicals.
  • Too much alcohol. There is conflicting data about a little which may help your heart. I think it works through relaxing you and hence a little meditation or self-hypnosis would have the same effect on your heart.
  • Fruit cocktails and juices made from the concentrate with added sugar. Note that the added sugar may be called: fructose; corn syrup; sucrose or some other term.
  • Milk -- in spite of what the milk marketing board tells you milk is not good for you. A large percentage of adults have milk intolerance and other allergies toward milk. Also most milk sold in the US is produced in factory farms where they pump the cows with growth hormones and antibiotics.

These drinks are better:

  • Water.
  • Fresh fruit juices with no added sugars.
  • Tea especially green tea which has even more antioxidants and stains the teeth less. It has less caffeine than coffee.
  • A glass of red wine a day. It has antioxidants but you can get the same goodness from red grape juice or grape seed pills.
  • Yoghourt. It is a better way of getting your milk. Even lactose intolerant people can eat yoghourt which is about eighty percent water. Low fat organic variety with live culture is the best.

As usual we do not suggest you be an extremist. The point is to be aware of what you are doing to your body and when you make compromises. It is the awareness and changing the overall pattern of how you treat your body which will boost your self-esteem.
